Tiwa Savage joins the ranks of Nigerian celebrities who perpetuate misogyny

It hasn’t been quite up to two years now, when Tiwa Savage in an interview with fashion and gossip journalist Azuka Ojuijiuba told the story of her troubled marriage. By that time, the rumours had already run rife, after Tunji “TeeBillz” Balogun, Tiwa Savage’s husband took to social media to accuse her of infidelity and emasculation and then afterwards, drove himself to the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge and threatened to jump off. It is highly convenient that his friend Banky W knew exactly where to find him and was able to rescue him before he took the plunge, but then again, threatening to kill one’s self when faced with the reality that an abused partner is about to leave the relationship for real is a trick as old as time. Tiwa Savage wept as she recounted her husband’s infidelities, his drug use and his general inability to contribute positively to their relationship. Ogujiuba rolled her eyes and smirked to herself through out the interview, seemingly in possession of information the rest of us didnt have. Well, it turns out she actually did.
Since that interview, Tiwa Savage has come into some real money, after signing a deal with international distribution label Roc Nation, and not long after reconciled with Balogun, using her son Jamal as her excuse for taking back a husband she told us was no good. A few months after, she is cementing that position by doing a 180 degree twist with this quote, given during a radio interview on Beat FM.
“I also don’t think men and women are equal, I don’t think that’s how God created us, especially in the household anyway.
“So I think as females when we realise that we can be strong in our career, when we are home we have to realise that the man is the head of the house.”
It’s always a red flag when a woman refers to herself and other women as ‘females’ and refers to men as men. But even more, I cannot even blame Tiwa Savage for being so blatantly ignorant, even though she is far more educated than the average Nigerian celebrity. Like most of them, she profits off the illusion of being a docile, subservient woman, even though the average Nigerian man considers her explicit dressing, long weaves and nose ring as wayward. Nigerian celebrities make an unspoken agreement to be complicit in the oppression of all Nigerian women in exchange for the right to be exempted from the rules they advocate for everyone else.
Is Tiwa Savage the head of home? Undoubtedly.
Does she profit off the illusion that she isn’t? Yes.
These celebrities are just that, celebrities, you’d do well to ignore them entirely.
