Take Me To A Psychiatrist If I Join Obasanjo’s Coalition – Soyinka

Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, says he should be examined by a psychiatrist if he joins the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) masterminded by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo recommended the coalition in a letter he wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari in January.

The elder statement had asked Nigerians to rally round the movement, saying neither the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) nor the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could give Nigeria the leadership it deserves.

But speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba, Soyinka said the coalition is not meant for someone like him.

“Me? Obasanjo would establish a group and I will become a member of such group? That means they should get a psychiatrist to examine me,” Soyinka said.

He also spoke about the letters which Obasanjo and former military President Ibrahim Babangida addressed to Buhari.

Soyinka said people should get suspicious “when these soldiers speak” because there is the possibility that “what they have in mind is different from what we have in mind”.

The scholar said nonetheless, the content of the message should be examined even though the messengers are not trustworthy.

“When these soldiers begin to speak, we are supposed to get suspicious and ask what exactly do they have in mind? It is possible that what they have in mind is different from what we have in mind,” he said.

“You can look at it from two perspectives, the messenger and the message. The message should be examined closely. We should not look at the misdeeds of the messenger alone. Let’s start by asking, is he saying the truth or telling lies, or is he being tricky?

“If he is saying the truth and talking about things that are beneficial to the masses, we would allow that be. After that, we would now look at the person speaking, what is in his mind? … even if it’s a little child who is speaking, as far as that child is saying the truth, we won’t ask the child to keep quiet. We won’t ask the child what do you know? We would listen. It is the same situation with those who have presided over the affairs of this nation without making significant progress.

“We have seen their weaknesses, we have seen their unclothedness in public, if they now want to be covered by saying that they have turned a new leaf, we would examine that, too. What I am saying in essence is that what they have said should also be examined.”

He urged the youth to come together and present a candidate to represent them, adding that the older generation would support them.

“We have a lot of them. It is the turn of the younger ones. If they come together, as we speak, if they can start now and bring out one individual among them, we will work with him,” he said.

“We are going to give them the support they need to transform the country. People like us are supposed to sit somewhere.”

I  Will Transform Osun Within Two Years, Guber Aspirant

I  Will Transform Osun Within Two Years, Guber Aspirant

A Governorship aspirant in Osun State  under the platform of  KOWA Party, Prof. Oluseyi Fabiyi has vowed to transform the state into a better condition within two years is voted in.

Prof Fabiyi made the pledge while addressing party members at his residence in Osogbo,  saying the people of Osun are missing but that he is ready to take them to the promised land.

Fabiyi who lectures in Kampala International university, Uganda, thereby urged the people of the state not to sell their votes for a few pennies or bags of rice.

“My people in Osun State are missing, I observe that education in Osun State has collapsed due to government inability to pay salary and because the state is more or less a civil service state. I observe that poverty in Osun State is so large and so obvious.

“Aregbesola’s administration is lopsided, only developing city roads. I believe the flyover in Gbongan is very unnecessary.

He is just building schools, the teachers are not properly renumerated, some are collecting half salary, some 75%, schools are not buildings and none of those schools have standard laboratories, Aregbesola is just showing off not minding proper laid down plans.”

Fabiyi who said he is an Home based and grass root politician, added that the only way to improve Osun is to look away from the Federal allocation because there is nothing there again.

Relating his agenda which he termed TEA with T standing for Technology group, innovation and Development, E for Entrepreneurial Empowerment and A for Agricultural Modernization, the KOWA party Gubernatorial aspirant said with the fear of God and the agenda, Osun’s economic would be transformed.

“I urge the people of Osun not to sell their votes, vote for noble character and achievements. We cannot continue to complain and that is why I present myself to change the State fortune. I  feel like crying to see graduates sweeping floor, that destroys their dignity. There will be rapid change in a matter of two years if people vote for me.”

Meet Fatee Muhammed, Female Politician Who Vows Atiku Will Be President After Buhari

Meet Fatee Muhammed, Female Politician Who Vows Atiku Will Be President After Buhari

Hon. Fatee Muhammed, an aspirant to the House of Representatives in Lagos State, businesswoman and Director-General, Atikunation, an Atiku Abubakar Volunteer Campaign Group, in this interview, speaks on her passion for public service, the Atiku presidency and charity. Excerpts…

Do you think it’s detrimental in the long term that women have to adopt an almost male persona in order to be taken seriously in politics?

In the first place, women do not even have to adopt a male persona in order to be taken seriously in politics. There are female managing directors of big organizations, who are wives, mothers and very feminine, but because they are good at their jobs, they attain such heights. A woman who is a good politician can also attain great heights in politics.

What challenges would you say a woman is likely to have to face and overcome in order to be validly elected governor or president in a country like Nigeria?

Challenges in politics are same for male and female, it does not recognize gender. Any determined female politician who wants to be a governor will certainly overcome the usual hurdles and will be elected governor and even president.

As a strong supporter of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and for the fact that Nigeria has always been unlucky with leaders that are authoritarian and domineering, would you like to give an insight into his personality that seems to be confusing some people?

That question makes me happy because it gives me an opportunity to erase the negative impressions people have about our principal, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Atiku is really a man that is passionate about the welfare of youths and women, he is an industrialist per excellence, his economic policy is evident and I know that when given an opportunity, he has what it takes to transform Nigeria.

A South Southerner has been elected the substantive chairman of the PDP. Meanwhile, there is the speculation that the new helmsman’s emergence may not be favourable to Atiku’s presidential dream. Do you share this view, and how exactly do you think the pendulum is going to swing in that regard?

I am happy you call it speculation because, that is what it is. May I remind you that party’s presidential candidate will have to be voted by the party delegates and not nominated by the party chairman? That is the rule. Besides, the new PDP chairman is a man we trust. He has been tested and he has the support of everyone of us.

On a personal note, how do you deal with difficult people?

I’d say I’m naturally a very blunt person so I don’t mince words in speaking my mind. I’m a react-on-the-spot kind of person but I guess age is calming me down. I’m a good manager too. I’m very good at managing people no matter the nature.

How do you ensure that, on the Atiku campaign task, your team is 100% committed to your strategy and the general rules, given that it is easier to buy loyalty than raise a loyalist?

Well, I’m happy I have a very dedicated team who would not be bought for a pot of porridge. We are men and women of proven integrity. Also, Nigerians are presently at the point where they will refuse to sell their birthrights. Many people are suffering, economy is terrible, parents have lost their jobs, businesses are dying etc. People are eager to return to their comfortable past. Still on loyalty, I’m confident what used to work in the past will definitely not work this time. So, loyalty is hard to buy in this kind of situation that we are in.

What is the most significant change that you think an Atiku presidency will bring about in Nigeria if elected president in 2019?

Atiku is our next president, In Sha Allah. He will bring the positive change we are yearning for. Our economy will return to its number one position in Africa. There will be restructuring of the nation, job creations, stable electricity and affordable health care, and many others.

As a businesswoman and an entrepreneur, how do you stay ahead of the competition given that the terrain is saturated?

To the glory of God, as a businesswoman, I am someone with a special unique selling point. So, that keeps endearing us to our customers. As an entrepreneur, I try as much to stay true to my passion for caring for the people in my own little ways. I do not give room to distractions.

The PDP and the Atiku camp obviously are in talks now. What would you advise the bargaining power between both parties should be like so that everyone is happy?

PDP desires to return back to power. Without being sentimental, the only candidate who can take PDP there is Atiku Abubakar. I’m certain both parties are aware of this fact.

What do you think should be a serious politician’s influencing style?

A serious politician’s influencing style is not necessarily a style but talking about the person of Atiku Abubakar, I’d say he is unique. He is very compassionate, a lover of fellow Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion, a successful businessman, a man so passionate about the wellbeing of the youths and women of Nigeria.

He charged the people of the local government on the need to pay taxes and other levies promptly saying "we shall not hesitate to play our roles as government if you fulfil your civic responsibilities".

"I will charge you all to let us embrace peace at all time because no development can be achieved where there is rancor and acrimony," he added

He however advised the youths to be law abiding and shun all forms of vices as the local government election approaches.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to God and thanked Tokede for putting smiles on their faces.

Osun Gives Delivery Kit To Women

Osun Gives Delivery Kit To Women

The Government of the State of Osun will on Monday, December 11, 2017 flag off the distribution of an all-in-one delivery pack or kit to hospitals and public health clinics for expectant women that want to deliver their babies in public health centres across the state.

The gesture is aimed to encourage expectant women to deliver their babies at health facility rather than homes and unhygienic means.

The provision of the delivery pack tagged: ‘Mama Kit’ is a government project focusing at improving maternal and child health. It is supported by Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in collaboration with Save One Million Lives Programme for Results (SOML PforR) of the Federal Government.

It will also increase the quality of care index at health centre level across the state and help to provide a clean and safe delivery for women that give birth in hospitals and clinics.

The delivery pack which would be provided for women most especially at rural areas contains a one-meter piece of cotton cloth (baby wrapper), one laundry soap, a pair of gloves, a piece of cotton wool, small gauze, cord ligature, razor blade and a meter of polythene sheet which is used on the delivery table. This also contains methylated spirit and sanitary pads for the mother.

Speaking on the programme, State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu said that the objective of the programme is to collaborate the Federal Government’s Saving One Million Lives Programme For Results (SOML PforR); increase the utilisation and quality of high impact reproductive, child health and nutrition interventions’ with overall goal of reducing under-5 mortality rate and maternal mortality rate.

He explained that since the inception of the programme in the State of Osun all hands have been on deck towards its successful implementation adding that health workers have been sensitised, trained and provision of essential materials have been embarked upon.

Dr. Isamotu stressed further that there would be symbolic presentation of the delivery pack to some women to attract them to public hospitals and clinics for clean and safe delivery.

He said further that the government will ensure proper accounting and auditing of the delivery pack so that the material will be available at all times and for everyone.

The Commissioner noted that the government will give more attention to rural areas especially those people who could not afford the delivery kit as well as discourage delivery at home, sensitise and incorporate traditional birth attendants so as to reduce under 5 mortality rate and maternal mortality rate and save mothers and children from needless death.

Aregbesola: ‘I Have Fulfilled Essence of Development in Governance'

The governor, state of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has expressed the conviction that his administration has performed excellently to the benefit of the generality of the people of the state, stressing that he has fulfill the essence of development in governance.
According to Aregbesola, the entire people of the state are directly enjoying and benefiting from his projects, policies  and programmes, saying that his administration has lived up to the expectation of the majority of people in the state.
Speaking at the Press Week lecture programme of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalist, Osun state Council in Osogbo on Thursday, Aregbesola challenged the media to set agenda for government and properly enlighten and inform the people about development.
Aregbesola said: “Media must set agenda for the government. It is unfortunate that media has painfully refused to set agenda for the government in a way that will aid development and wellbeing of the people.
“Development should be for all citizens and not about few people. It is not about a section of the people but that which will positively affect all, civil servants who are important, significant and germane in the society.
“If government lives for only those in government alone, then government must have lost its value hence the reason why our government prefers to make projects that benefits majority of the people of Osun.
The governor maintained that the essence of government is compassion, adding that the primary role of government is to be compassionate and be concerned on the welfare and wellbeing of the people.
“The roads that government built will be used by all, including the civil servants, the drainages we are building will save the civil servants from flood, the security we are improving upon to make sure that life is lived well will equally affect the civil servants. That’s development for all of us.
‘But what media report is that we don’t pay salary; we pay half salary. Nobody genuinely will deliberately want to make life miserable for anybody; no responsible government will go out of its way to make things difficult for its own people.
“The essence of government is compassion. Government must be for all and government must be compassionate to the people, not to the few but all. If government’s primary role is to be concerned on the welfare and wellbeing of the people, then there can’t be any question as whether government can guaranty minimum living condition and salary to all or not”, he said.

The Deputy Speaker restated his commitment and loyalty to the APC as he said that if there are any grievances with the processes, there are internal mechanisms with the party to addressing such.

He however disassociated himself from the court judgment.

See List Of Coup Plotters In Nigeria & What Happened To Them Eventually (Photos)

I was thinking of the bloodless and very peaceful military intervention in Zimbabwe. What if it had gone awry? The collective weariness of the good people of Zimbabwe of Mugabe’s Methuselah-esque misrule worked in their favour, but it could have easily gone south, like it did for our Nigerian brethren during the era of military intervention.

All photos and list sourced from Abiyamo
