Women stretching their lips in order to accommodate a big lip disc is a common practice among the Surma and Mursi people of the lower Omo River in Ethiopia.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the previous record for a lip-disc is 15cm in diameter.
But why this practice?
They are worn by women in other to attract husbands.
It is believed that the larger the lip, the larger the dowry, which is usually cattle.
It is reported that a woman with a large disc could get as many as 50 cattle as dowry.
