Many of us feel sad, lonely, worried, or go through so much at some point in our lives. Even though, feeling depressed is a normal reaction to loss, life’s struggles, or an injured self-esteem. However, when these feelings become overwhelming, involve physical symptoms, and last for longer periods of time, they trigger other things. They can keep you from leading a normal, active life. A lot of the time, many don’t know, nor quickly detect these signs of depression in themselves and, or their loved ones early enough.
If left untreated, symptoms of depression may worsen and last for months or sometimes even years. They can cause untold suffering that may lead to suicide when the person feels he or she can’t handle it any longer. Hence, it is important to identify the symptoms of depression early enough in order to seek help. Here are some signs of depression to watch out for;
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions: Whenever you are finding it very difficult to concentrate on a particular task, and that you can’t seem to remember details of things you normally would remember easily, you might have to start watching out for depression.
- Fatigue and decreased energy: Another sign of depression is feeling tired having done so little, compared to what you would normally do. Added to that is decreased levels of energy that makes you to easily give up on the tasks.
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness: Feelings of guilt often follow the loss of someone or something when you feel you could have done something to keep them alive. You could also start feeling worthless as a result of not being able to do anything, and or helplessness at the thought of the loss. These two or three are like beads on a rope that tend to follow after each other.
- Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism: Having tried so much and not getting results, feelings of hopelessness and or pessimism sets in. At that point nothing makes much sense and you may start giving up on every dream and aspiration.
- Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping: The human body responds to situations differently. For some, it is chronic lack of sleep, while for others, it is excessive sleeping. Such people consciously or unconsciously sleep as their form of escape, while lack of it is the way others react to depression.
Depression carries a high risk of suicide. Anyone who is expressing suicidal thoughts or intentions should be taken very, very seriously. Do not waste in calling your local suicide hotline immediately, or the police.
