Awards season has officially begun! The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, brought out the best stars in television. Actresses like Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, Chrissy Metz and Laverne Cox all made their way down the red carpet at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 17.
As always, the show celebrated the best in television with shows like This Is Us, Orange Is The New Black, and Big Little Lies being celebrated for their excellence on the small screen. In all categories, competition was tough, especially for the women, with roles for women getting better and better. Plus, with more and more movie stars — like Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman — nominated, it just made things more exciting. Television couldn’t be better right now and that was reflected in this year’s show.
With any award show, the red carpet is one of the best parts of the night. The men of Hollywood looked sharp, but the women looked downright incredible. There was lace, sparkles, and menswear, and couture that most of us could only dream of wearing. Plus, to top it all off, the hair and makeup was stunning.
Below, we have rounded up our 13 favourite looks from women who continue to shine on and off our television sets. All of these women who were nominated deserve to win an Emmy, however since not everyone can, a spot on a best dressed list will just have to do.
1. Reese Witherspoon
The Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie nominee for Big Little Lies stunned in a blue menswear inspired look. The actress has raved about how filming the HBO special created strong friendships with her co-stars, like fellow nominee Nicole Kidman. ‘The intimacy of friendship that was created through this process really showed through, I think, in the work,’ she told Entertainment Weekly.
2. Chrissy Metz
The This Is Us star, who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, walked the red carpet in a lacy emerald dress. Earlier this month, she discussed how much she relates to her character, Kate Pearson, with The Hollywood Reporter.
‘Here was this woman who was actually dealing with weight. Not like, ‘Oh my God, I gained a pound,” the 36-year-old said. ‘She was a real woman who was really struggling, and all I could think was, ‘Oh my God, I’m Kate.”
3. Nicole Kidman
‘I’ve said this, but as I get older the idea of all of this, it gets sweeter,’ the two-time nominee, who wore a red Calvin Klein By Appointment dress to the show, told Gold Derby. ‘Each nomination, like for Lion when I got nominated last year, and then to get this for Big Little Lies, I feel it more. It seems to really penetrate and be … probably because I’ve had ups and downs and all of those and to finally be here at this stage of my life is very, very special.’
4. Keri Russell
The two-time nominee for her role in The Americans wore an intricate black gown and was escorted down the carpet by her co-star and partner Matthew Rhys. ‘It’s always nice to be able to be given the option to go out on a high note instead of at year 15 when they’re running out of story lines,’ she told The Hollywood Reporter of gearing up for the final season of the show. ‘It will be sad to see it go but the time is right.’
5. Mandy Moore
The newly engaged This Is Us star stunned in a black and white gown with pink lipstick. ‘To be a part of a project that seems to have struck a chord with a broad swatch of people and help unite us all during tumultuous times, isn’t lost on any of us,’ she told Deadline about her show, which received 11 Emmy noms.
6. Viola Davis
The How To Get Away With Murder star walked the carpet in a custom Zac Posen dress and Harry Winston jewels. The three-time nominee for her role on the Shonda Rimes drama won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2015, but lost out to Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black last year.
7. Robin Wright
This year’s Emmys marked Robin’s fifth time being nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for her role in House of Cards. The actress, who wore a sparkly black dress, has gotten a bit into directing for her hit Netflix show, something few women get the chance to do. In an interview with Vanity Fair she advised women who want to challenge industry standards to ‘stand your ground, speak your truth, and amplify your voice.’
8. Tracee Ellis Ross
‘I’m excited to think about my acceptance speech. I’ve been thinking about that since I was 12,’ the Black-ish star, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the second time, told ABC News. And while she stunned in Chanel Couture, she admitted on Wednesday that she still had to figure out what she was wearing.
9. Uzo Aduba
Uzo Aduba shined in a silver dress. The three-time nominee for her role in Orange is the New Black, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year about her character Suzanne. ‘It’s important to shed a light on Suzanne because we’re still living in a time where we’re still not having the fair and just conversation about mental illness in this country,’ she explained.
10. Shailene Woodley
There is no rivalry between Shailene — who wore a Ralph Lauren dress on the red carpet — and her Big Little Lies co-star Laura Dern, even though they were both nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.
‘We all played very different roles, had very different story lines, and there is no competition. A win for any of us is a win for all of us,’ the actress explained in an interview with The New York Times.
11. Jessica Biel
The presenter stunned in a metallic gown at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. She opened about her son Silas, 2, to People on the red carpet. ‘Now, he’s saying to me, ‘No, no, Mommy! We are not gonna do this anymore,’’ the 35-year-old said. ‘And, ‘This is not a match’ — which means, ‘I don’t wanna do this.’’
12. Laverne Cox
‘When I began to understand that it was my job to be of service, to use being trans as something that was not a deficit that would keep me from acting [but as] something that made me unique and special, my career changed,’ the Orange is the New Black nominee, who wore Naeem Khan, told Backstage.
13. Laura Dern
‘It’s so rare for a tribe of woman to get together and make art and become a family,’ Laura told E! News of Big Little Lies on the red carpet. She looked gorgeous in her patterned frock and later took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.
