A 28-year old Indian journalist identified Shantanu Bhowmick was reportedly killed yesterday in the North-Eastern Indian state of Tripura while covering a protest.
According to the state’s police chief AK Shukla, the reporter from Dinraat news channel, was attacked and abducted late Wednesday while he was at protests held by the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura. His body was later found with multiple stab wounds and he died by the time he reached the hospital.
So far, Four members of the IPFT, an organisation representing tribal people, have been detained for questioning, following the second incident of a journalist being killed in India within a month.
Senior journalist and activist, Gauri Lankesh, was earlier gunned down outside her home in Bangalore on September 5, 2017 leading to widespread protests and concern over the security of journalists in the country.
